As Akasa Air embarks on a bold new milestone, the airline is all set to initiate direct flights between Kochi and Jeddah, from June 29, 2025. This development marks a significant leap in connectivity between Kerala and Saudi Arabia, offering travellers a seamless and affordable transit option on one of India’s most critical international routes.

This expasion is part of Akasa’s deliberate international expansion strategy, building on its initial foray into the Middle East in March 2024 with direct flights from Mumbai to Doha. With Kochi now added to the international roster, Akasa is tapping into Kerala’s large expatriate community in Saudi Arabia, while also opening new corridors for tourism, leisure travel, and trade engagement.

The Kochi–Jeddah service will run twice weekly, operated on Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, delivering a modern, fuel-efficient travel experience tailored to long-haul short-haul routes. This deployment underlines the airline’s approach to strategically blend cost-efficiency with adequate capacity and reliability for this high-demand sector.

A significant number of passengers from Kerala travel to Jeddah for religious pilgrimage, employment, or family reunions. Akasa’s direct flight option addresses this demand by removing reliance on indirect routes or connecting itineraries, reducing travel time and enhancing convenience. This will also support incoming tourism to Kerala, with Saudi travellers gaining direct access to God’s Own Country.

Furthermore, Akasa’s move aligns with Saudi Arabia’s diversification agenda, which aims to double the number of Indian visitors from Kerala, among others, over the next few years. Increased flight frequency between Kochi and Jeddah will support tourism growth for both destinations.

This launch follows a pattern of rapid growth in the Middle East for Akasa. Since its international debut in March 2024, the airline has expanded its presence significantly by connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad directly to Doha and Jeddah. The Kochi–Jeddah route underlines Akasa’s aspiration to build a compelling regional network, especially targeting cities with strong diaspora links and growing outbound tourism demand.

Akasa has also been granted traffic rights to Riyadh and Kuwait, which may enable further expansions in the Arabian Peninsula. Each new route strengthens the airline’s presence in key diaspora and pilgrimage markets, while contributing to bilateral tourism, commerce, and cultural exchange.

Akasa’s international foray is part of a wider vision to join the ranks of the world’s top 30 airlines by the end of this decade. Expanding into high-demand markets like the Middle East, the airline is aiming to extend its footprint by combining domestic scale, international linkages, and brand-led service differentiation.

For Indian expatriates planning return journeys, this is an opportunity to fly clearer, faster, and more affordably. For Kerala’s tourism industry, it opens fresh dialogue with Saudi markets. And for the airline itself, it marks another strategic stride toward its global ambitions.
