Who was Namansh Syal? IAF pilot who died in Tejas fighter jet crash at Dubai Air Show

New Delhi: Wing Commander Namansh Syal, an Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, tragically lost his life when a Tejas fighter jet crashed during a flying demonstration at the Dubai Air Show on Friday. The single-seat Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), went down at around 2:10 pm local time, according to eyewitnesses and video footage obtained by media reports. 

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the pilot’s death, describing it as “heartbreaking and heart-rending.”

“The nation has lost a brave, dutiful, and courageous pilot. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members,” Sukhu wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I pay heartfelt tribute to the indomitable bravery, dedication to duty, and commitment to national service of this brave son.”

Who was Namansh Syal?

Wing Commander Syal, 34, hailed from Patiyalkar village in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. He is survived by his wife, also an IAF officer, their six-year-old daughter, and his parents.

Syal completed his schooling at Sainik School, Sujanpur Tira, in Hamirpur district. His father, Jagarnath Syal, served in the Indian Army before retiring as a principal in the education department, ANI reported.

According to a relative, Ramesh Kumar, “Namansh Syal’s parents are currently at the Sulur Air Force Station near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. His wife, who also serves in the IAF, is in Kolkata for a course. The entire village is very sad today.”

Syal had reached the rank of squadron leader and was due for promotion.

Details of the Tejas Crash

Video footage of the incident suggests that the pilot was unable to recover from a negative-G manoeuvre at low altitude, a characteristic feature of Tejas demonstrations. Just before impact, the aircraft appeared to have level wings, but its vertical speed was too great, preventing recovery. The pilot did not eject.
