Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla resigns from BJP again, asks party to accept decision

New Delhi: BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla has submitted his resignation to the party for the second time, asking the leadership to accept it and relieve him of his organisational responsibilities. In his latest letter, Poonawalla referred to “certain individuals” and said recent events had reinforced his decision to leave.

Poonawalla had first submitted his resignation on July 30, citing pressing financial and personal circumstances. The BJP leadership did not accept it at the time and asked him to reconsider. He has now renewed his request, saying he intends to move into the private sector.

From Congress critic to BJP spokesperson

Poonawalla began his political career with the Congress and became prominent in 2017 after publicly questioning the party's internal leadership election process. He alleged that the process was designed to favour Rahul Gandhi's elevation as Congress president. He subsequently left the Congress and joined the BJP.

After joining the BJP, Poonawalla became one of the party's prominent television and social media representatives, regularly defending the party and criticising the Congress and other opposition parties. He has also written and spoken extensively about the BJP's political positions and the Modi government's policies.

His latest resignation

In his second resignation letter, Poonawalla thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Nitin Nabin and several senior BJP leaders for the opportunities and platform he received during his time in the party. He said his decision was not made out of resentment and again cited personal and financial circumstances.

However, he also referred to “certain individuals” whose actions in recent days, he said, had reinforced his decision. He did not identify those individuals publicly.

What Poonawalla says about his political association

Poonawalla said he would leave the BJP's organisational structure but indicated that he would continue supporting the work and political vision of Prime Minister Modi. His resignation therefore marks a departure from the BJP as an active member and spokesperson, while his statement makes clear that he does not intend to distance himself from Modi personally.

This distinction is significant because Poonawalla has been one of the BJP's more recognisable public defenders in television debates and political commentary.

BJP ideology and Poonawalla's political shift

Poonawalla's political journey has moved from the Congress to the BJP, two parties with sharply different political approaches.
