Both Houses adjourned till Tuesday amid uproar over NEET on first day of Monsoon session

New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament got off to a stormy start on Monday, with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha witnessing repeated disruptions over the alleged NEET examination irregularities before being adjourned for the day till Tuesday.

The session, which will continue until August 13, opened amid expectations of intense political confrontations, with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) preparing to introduce a series of key reform Bills while the Opposition sought to corner the government on a range of contentious matters.

The Lok Sabha witnessed noisy protests by Opposition members demanding a discussion on the alleged NEET paper leak and examination irregularities. Repeated disruptions forced the House to be adjourned several times before it was finally adjourned for the day.

The Rajya Sabha too saw similar scenes. Soon after the House assembled, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised the alleged NEET paper leak and ongoing student protests, calling it a matter affecting the future of lakhs of students. Referring to protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, Kharge alleged that protesters had faced police action.

"You have allowed me to present my views regarding this paper leak and the NEET examination scandal. This is a matter concerning students; I am speaking about the futures of lakhs of children. Thousands of students have gathered at Jantar Mantar for this cause. A lathi-charge has taken place there. The government is trying to use force, suppress voices, and drive them away," he said.

The Upper House was initially adjourned till noon and, following further disruptions, was also adjourned for the day. Both Houses will now reconvene on Tuesday.

PM Modi calls for constructive debate

Ahead of the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Members of Parliament to ensure productive and meaningful debates, expressing hope that both the seasonal monsoon and the Monsoon Session would prove fruitful.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India's economic resilience, stating that the country recorded 7.7 per cent economic growth despite challenges arising from the conflict in West Asia. He also lauded recent achievements in the space sector, including the success of Skyroot Aerospace.

Key Bills on government's agenda

The Centre has lined up an extensive legislative agenda for the session, including the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, the Income-tax (Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Supreme Court Amendment Bill, 2026, which seeks to increase the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges.

The government is also expected to take up the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, along with proposed amendments to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.

With the Opposition preparing to raise issues including the NEET row and other political controversies, the Monsoon Session is expected to witness further confrontations alongside crucial legislative business in the coming weeks.
