India–China air connectivity soars | Check the new direct routes launched in 2026

Air connectivity between India and China is gaining momentum as several carriers introduce new direct routes linking major cities in the two countries, signalling growing economic engagement and strengthening bilateral relations.

Key New Routes:

Kolkata ↔ Shanghai (IndiGo) – India’s largest airline launched a daily service on 29 March, connecting Kolkata to China’s commercial hub. The new route was formally inaugurated by Pratik Mathur, who described it as a sign of growing confidence and deepening economic ties. Kolkata now becomes the second Indian metro, after New Delhi, to have a direct flight to Shanghai.

Guangzhou ↔ Delhi (China Southern Airlines) – This new route is scheduled to debut in the summer-autumn season, providing a direct link between India’s capital and southern China, enhancing business and tourism opportunities.

Kunming ↔ Kolkata (China Eastern Airlines) – Resuming operations from 18 April, this flight restores a direct connection between eastern India and southwestern China, catering to both commercial and passenger demand.

Beijing Capital ↔ Delhi (Air China) – Set to launch on 21 April, this service strengthens direct connectivity between India’s political centre and China’s capital, reflecting closer strategic and economic ties.

Officials from the Indian Consulate highlighted that the expansion of air routes reflects positive momentum in bilateral engagement. Indian carriers, including IndiGo and Air India, have recently broadened services connecting Shanghai with key Indian cities, further boosting regional connectivity.

These new routes are expected to facilitate trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, while providing more travel options for passengers and strengthening economic links between India and China. The expansion also underscores the strategic importance of air connectivity in enhancing bilateral relations.
