Kollam: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has assured a review of baggage declaration regulations to clear confusion over the quantity and value of gold that travellers can bring into India, N.K. Premachandran MP said.

Under the 2016 regulations, female travellers are allowed to bring gold worth ₹1 lakh (40 grams), while male travellers may carry gold valued at ₹50,000 (20 grams).

Rising gold prices causing difficulties

When the rules were framed in 2016, gold was priced at ₹2,500 per gram. With current rates having increased nearly fivefold, travellers face significant challenges due to ambiguities in the regulations.

Officials have indicated that the rules could be amended to allow the import of specified gold weights without calculating their value, the MP added.
