Tamil Nadu rain alert: Heavy downpour causes waterlogging, disrupts life in Puducherry

Chennai: Tamil Nadu is facing heavy rainfall in several isolated areas, causing major disruptions to daily life and major services on Saturday. The relentless rain has led to waterlogging on roads, making travel difficult for residents.

In Chennai, many areas recorded extremely heavy rainfall until 8:30 am on Thursday. Kathivakkam received 23 cm of rain, Manali got 21 cm, Cholavaram recorded 30 cm, Red Hills received 28 cm, and Avadi experienced 25 cm.

The depression over the west-central and adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwest at a speed of 14 km per hour. It crossed the coast between Puducherry and Nellore around 4:30 am on Thursday.

In response to the situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited rain-affected areas in the Kolathur Assembly Constituency and distributed relief supplies on Thursday. Stalin said, "The Tamil Nadu Government is ready to face any situation. Precautionary measures have been implemented across the state.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader T.K.S. Elangovan mentioned that the water levels had receded quickly, crediting the state government's efforts over the past two years. Elangovan remarked, "Naturally, if rain continues for 3-4 days, problems will arise. When Jayalalitha was Chief Minister, this problem occurred twice, including in 2015. What was done then? There were heavy floods, and most industrial areas were inundated. With heavy rainfall, issues are inevitable. We are laying pipelines, and while there was waterlogging for two days after the rain stopped last time, this time, the water receded quickly. This shows the effectiveness of our actions over the past two years."

He also noted that all DMK ministers were actively assessing the flood situation and working to provide assistance to the public.
