Delhi wakes up to heavy rain and thunderstorms; waterlogging reported in parts of the capital

New Dellhi: Delhi woke up to heavy rain and thunderstorms on Monday morning, October 12, bringing cooler conditions to the national capital and causing waterlogging near Jhandewalan Temple in the Karol Bagh area.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over Delhi-NCR for the next two to three hours.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across Delhi on Monday morning, October 12, bringing overcast skies and a noticeable change in weather conditions. The rainfall also led to waterlogging near Jhandewalan Temple in the Karol Bagh area of central Delhi.
The IMD issued a short-term weather warning, stating that moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms was likely over Delhi-NCR during the following two to three hours.
The showers brought some relief from the prevailing temperatures, with the weather department reporting a fall of 1–2 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures across Delhi over the preceding 24 hours. Minimum temperatures showed no significant change.
According to the IMD, minimum temperatures ranged between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius, while maximum temperatures remained between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius.
Delhi weather forecast for the coming days
Despite Monday morning's rainfall, the IMD forecast partly cloudy skies and no rain over Delhi for the following several days. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are likely to range between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius.
According to the seven-day forecast issued on Sunday evening, the expected temperatures are:
October 13: Maximum 32–34°C; minimum 23–25°C.
October 14: Maximum 33–35°C; minimum 23–25°C.
October 15: Maximum 31–33°C; minimum 23–25°C.
October 16: Maximum 32–34°C; minimum 22–24°C.
October 17: Maximum 32–34°C; minimum 22–24°C.
Partly cloudy skies and no rainfall were forecast for these dates.
IMD issues advisory for commuters
The IMD had warned of possible traffic disruptions, water accumulation in low-lying areas and an increased risk of vehicle accidents due to rainfall. It advised commuters to check traffic conditions before leaving for their destinations, follow official traffic advisories and avoid roads and stretches that frequently experience waterlogging.
The warning highlights the potential for localised disruption during intense spells of rain, particularly on roads and in low-lying areas where drainage may be inadequate.
Commuters were advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions and allow for possible delays while travelling.
What Monday's rain means for Delhi
The rainfall marks a temporary change in Delhi's weather, with thunderstorms and showers bringing cooler conditions to the capital. However, the IMD's forecast of dry weather and maximum temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius indicates that the cooler conditions may not persist for long.
Waterlogging near Jhandewalan Temple also highlights the immediate transport challenges that can arise during heavy rainfall. Even a short spell of intense rain can disrupt traffic and create hazardous conditions on affected roads.
With dry weather forecast for the following days, the immediate concern is likely to be the impact of Monday's showers on traffic and localised water accumulation rather than a prolonged period of wet weather. Residents should follow updated IMD forecasts and traffic advisories for any changes.
