Kannadiga drivers blocked on Uber app? Massive protest in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Hundreds of cab drivers staged a large protest outside Uber’s office near Bommanahalli in Bengaluru, accusing the company of discrimination, denial of work and predatory surge pricing.
Protesters claimed that Kannadiga drivers were being blocked on the platform, while drivers from Bangladesh and other states, some allegedly without valid licences, were receiving priority for ride assignments. They also alleged that vehicles owned directly by the company were being favoured over those attached through the platform, according to reports.
The demonstration, organised by the Bharat Transport Association, escalated quickly, forcing police to intervene. Officers dispersed the crowd with a lathi-charge and detained several protesters. One platoon of the Karnataka State Reserve Police was deployed to control the situation.
As the mob surrounded the building, Uber staff shut the office doors. Tensions grew further when police attempted to force the doors open using an iron rod; employees eventually exited through the rear of the building. Senior police officials later held discussions with Uber representatives, who said senior management was on the way to meet the protesters.
Drivers said they had invested lakhs of rupees to purchase vehicles based on the company’s promises, but were now unable to meet loan repayments or household expenses due to a sharp decline in bookings. They also accused Uber of repeatedly violating Karnataka’s “One City, One Fare” policy by charging passengers double the fare during peak hours, heavy rain or high-demand conditions.
Despite police intervention, the protesters refused to leave until senior officials met them directly. After a second round of lathi-charge, several drivers were detained, and the demonstration was dispersed.
An official response from Uber is awaited.
