The countdown to Durga Puja has begun, but the weather could play spoiler in the final days of preparations.

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is set to influence weather conditions across West Bengal, with rain and gusty winds expected to intensify from Tuesday, September 22.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in parts of Bengal, while heavy rainfall is expected in several areas over the next few days.

Rain threat grows from Tuesday

Kolkata has already been witnessing cloudy skies, rain and thunderstorms.

The IMD's Kolkata forecast indicates rain or thundershowers are likely on September 22 and 23, with gusty winds accompanying thunderstorms.

The weather system could bring heavier showers to several districts, raising concerns over waterlogging and disruption to normal life.

Coastal districts such as East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas are expected to see greater rainfall intensity, with gusty winds potentially reaching 40 to 50 kmph, according to reports citing the meteorological department.

The spell of unsettled weather comes at a crucial time for Bengal, with Durga Puja preparations and last-minute shopping already underway.

Persistent rain could affect pandal work, outdoor preparations, shopping and travel in several areas.

What about North Bengal?

North Bengal is also expected to see an increase in rainfall in the coming days.

The IMD has issued warnings for heavy rain, thunderstorms and squally conditions in parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal from September 23 onwards, with very heavy rain indicated for September 25.

Kolkata:

For Kolkata, the IMD's current forecast shows rain or thundershowers continuing through September 25, with thunderstorms and gusty winds remaining a possibility.

With the festive season approaching, Bengal will now be keeping a close watch on the skies as the low-pressure system continues to influence the weather.
