FIPRESCI to honour Goutam Ghose with Lifetime Achievement Award

Kolkata: The India chapter of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI-India) has announced that filmmaker Goutam Ghose will be honoured with the FIPRESCI-100 Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to Cinema at the ongoing Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).

The recognition marks the centenary year (2025–26) of the founding of FIPRESCI, the global association of film critics established in 1925.

Born on July 24, 1950, Goutam Ghose is a film director, actor, music director and cinematographer based in Kolkata. He began his career with the documentary 'New Earth' in 1973, followed by 'Hungry Autumn' (1974), which won the top prize at the Oberhausen Film Festival.

 
 

Ghose went on to make several acclaimed documentaries on icons such as Satyajit Ray, Bismillah Khan, Raja Rammohan Roy, KG Subramanyan, and Jyoti Basu.

His debut feature film, 'Maa Bhoomi' (1980), made in Telugu, won the Andhra Pradesh State Film Award for Best Film. His second feature, 'Dakhal' (1981), in Bengali, earned him his first National Film Award for Best Feature Film.

His third feature, 'Paar' (1984), in Hindi, was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival and later received the FIPRESCI Award at the Verna Film Festival.

Over the years, Ghose has directed 16 feature films, 17 documentaries, and four short films, winning 16 National Film Awards, 13 for feature films and three for documentaries.

His notable works include 'Antarjali Jatra' (1987), 'Padma Nadir Majhi' (1992), 'Patang' (1993), Gudia (1997), 'Dekha' (2001), 'Abar Aranye' (2003), 'Moner Manush' (2010), and 'Shankhachil' (2016).

Ghose is the only Indian filmmaker to have received the Vittorio Di Sica Award from Italy and was conferred with the Knighthood of the Star of the Italian Solidarity in 2006 for his contributions to world cinema.
