After a two-decade run as a pioneering video-calling platform, Skype officially ceases operations today, Monday, May 5, 2025. Microsoft, which acquired Skype in 2011, had announced the retirement of the once-ubiquitous service in February, stating that its functionalities will be integrated into Microsoft Teams.

Skype, founded in 2003 by a team of engineers in Tallinn, Estonia, revolutionized communication by offering internet-based telephone calls as an alternative to traditional landlines. The platform leveraged Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) technology, converting audio into digital signals for online transmission.

The service gained rapid popularity and in 2005, was acquired by online retailer eBay, which subsequently introduced the video calling feature that became synonymous with the platform. In 2011, Microsoft took over the reins, purchasing Skype from eBay for a substantial $8.5 billion. At that time, Skype boasted approximately 170 million users worldwide, according to reports.

Skype remained a prominent communication tool for years, even being utilized by the US administration under then-President Donald Trump to field questions from reporters as recently as 2017. However, the rise of Microsoft Teams and other platforms, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, saw Skype's prominence gradually decline. Platforms like Slack, Zoom, and the increasingly feature-rich Teams gained ground, pushing Skype into the background.

Today marks the final day for Skype, a transition that will affect both free and paid users of the original platform, with the exception of Skype for Business users who will remain unaffected.

What Happens to Your Skype Account?

Existing Skype users can seamlessly transition to Microsoft Teams Free using their current Skype account credentials, eliminating the need to create a new account. For those who prefer not to use Microsoft Teams Free, an option to export their data from Skype is available.

Users can download the Microsoft Teams application from its official website and log in using their personal Skype account details to begin using the platform. Importantly, all existing chats and contacts will be automatically transferred to Teams Free upon login with the Skype ID.

Skype Data Migration and Availability

Upon signing into Microsoft Teams Free, users will receive a notification within their Skype application prompting them to initiate the data migration process. Microsoft estimates that the synchronization of data from Skype to Teams Free should take less than a minute.

However, it's important to note that chats between standard Skype users and Teams work or school accounts will not be migrated. Users on Teams Free will need to initiate new conversations with Teams work or school users. Similarly, the chat history between Skype and Skype Business users, as well as one-on-one chat history with oneself, will not be transferred. Private conversation data, Copilot, and bot content from Skype will also not be supported in Teams Free, and their associated chat history will not be available.

Microsoft has stated that users will have until January 2026 to either export or delete their Skype data. If users log in to Microsoft Teams Free by this deadline, their Skype call and chat history will remain accessible within Teams. Failure to take action by January 2026 will result in the deletion of Skype data.

Additionally, as of today, May 5th, several Skype services, including call forwarding, Skype Credit gifting, and Caller ID setup, will no longer be available. While Microsoft Teams Free does not support paid calling plans, small businesses can consider opting for Teams Essential, which can be paired with Microsoft Teams Phone, a cloud-based call control solution.

Microsoft Teams Free encompasses all the core functionalities of Skype, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing. Furthermore, Teams Free offers advanced features such as meeting hosting, calendar management, and the ability to build and join communities.
