OpenAI launches Sora video app on Android, offering AI video creation across select global regions

OpenAI has officially rolled out its Sora video app for Android users, allowing creators to produce AI-generated videos directly from their smartphones using the advanced Sora 2 model. The launch follows its debut on Apple’s App Store last month, where it quickly attracted thousands of users experimenting with AI video creation.
Bill Peebles, Head of Sora at OpenAI, confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the Sora app was now available to download on Android.
Meanwhile, Sora’s official X handle revealed that the app is currently accessible in select regions, including Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the United States, and Vietnam.
The company had been hinting at an Android release in recent weeks, along with several updates such as enhanced video editing options and pet cameo features.
Access Sora without an invite code
When Sora first launched on iOS, users needed an invite code to join the platform. However, on October 30, OpenAI announced that, for a limited period, new users in the United States, Canada, Japan, and South Korea could access the app without an invite. This update coincides with the Android release, allowing users in these regions to create AI videos right away.
Key features of the Sora AI video app
Sora enables users to generate videos using simple text prompts. Participants can feature friends or other users who have opted in for the cameo feature. Even well-known personalities, such as Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban, have made their AI likenesses available for Sora videos.
The app also allows pet and object cameos, and OpenAI has hinted at introducing monetisation features that may let users earn money through the platform in the future.
