Google is on track to revolutionise desktop computing with the launch of Aluminium OS, an Android-based operating system designed for PCs, expected to roll out in 2026. This strategic move will mark the beginning of the end for ChromeOS, Google's long-standing desktop platform, as the company pivots towards a future powered by artificial intelligence.

Internal job postings and code references uncovered by Android Authority reveal that Google’s new Aluminium OS is being created with AI as a foundational component. A recent Senior Product Manager listing explicitly describes the operating system as: "a new operating system built with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core," and makes clear that Google will "transit Google from ChromeOS to Aluminium," ensuring stability and continuity throughout the transition. The listing further hints at a broad hardware strategy, with compatibility across existing Chromebooks and premium laptop devices, and references active testing on MediaTek Kompanio 520 and Intel 12th Gen processors.

The company’s ambitions for Aluminium OS extend beyond entry-level computing. At the recent Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit, Google announced a partnership with Qualcomm to create "a common technical foundation for products on PCs and desktop computing systems." Rick Osterloh, Google’s SVP of Devices and Services, emphasised the integration of Gemini AI models and Google's suite of applications into the PC ecosystem, a move designed to merge mobile intelligence with desktop versatility. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon hailed the collaboration, affirming that the new OS "delivers on the vision of convergence of mobile and PC."

As both ChromeOS and Aluminium OS are likely to coexist during the transition, Google is positioning Aluminium as a comprehensive, AI-centric platform poised to challenge Microsoft Windows and Apple's macOS. By leveraging Android’s mobile heritage and a robust AI framework, Google aims to reshape the future of personal computing. The first wave of Aluminium OS-powered devices is slated for release in 2026.
