Elon Musk’s xAI has unlocked Grok Imagine, letting anyone worldwide create AI-generated images and videos—for free

Elon Musk’s xAI has thrown open the doors to Grok Imagine, its multimodal artificial intelligence tool, making it available to all users worldwide at no cost. The move comes just weeks after its launch and marks the first time the AI-powered text-to-image and image-to-video generator can be accessed without a premium subscription.
Initially launched as a premium feature for SuperGrok and Premium+ X subscribers on iOS, Grok Imagine quickly expanded to Android before now being offered to everyone globally. Users can create still images or short, 15-second-long videos with native audio, either by uploading photos or using AI-generated artwork inside the app.
Features and Controversy
One of Grok Imagine’s standout features is speed—it is regarded as one of the fastest AI video generators available. However, the tool has sparked controversy, especially due to its infamous “Spicy” mode, which enabled the generation of explicit content. While modes like Custom, Normal, Fun, and Spicy are reportedly unavailable in the free version, their earlier existence has already raised concerns online.
Beyond mature content, safety questions loom large. During tests, Grok Imagine easily generated lifelike images and animations of public figures, including international and Indian celebrities—something most leading AI video tools, such as OpenAI’s Sora, Google’s Veo 3, Runway, and Pika, strictly prohibit. The ability to produce deepfake-like videos and even copyrighted characters is likely to intensify debates around responsible AI use.
How to Use Grok Imagine?
- Download or update the Grok app on iOS or Android.
- Tap the “Imagine” tab in the top-right corner.
- Use the text box at the bottom to type a prompt or upload an image.
- Explore generated variations and tap “Make Video” to animate them.
So if one types: create images with AI, or uses commands such as create AI images, or even generate AI images, by sending certain text inputs, Grok Imagine will easily create content out of them.
For now, the free version does not allow adding prompts to videos, but the paid version unlocks additional creative controls.
With this move, Elon Musk has effectively placed one of the fastest AI image-to-video generators into the hands of millions—for free—but questions about misuse, safety, and ethics will only grow louder.
