Melbourne: At age of 43, Rohan Bopanna becomes oldest Grand Slam champion in men's tennis by winning the doubles title along with Matthew Ebden at the ongoing Australian Open.
The pair claimed a 7-6 (7/0), 7-5 victory over unseeded Italian pair Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori on Rod Laver Arena.
It was their maiden title as a team and Bopanna's first in men's doubles after 60 previous Grand Slams -- a record for most attempts before winning.
The tournament so far has been extremely remarkable for Bopanna as earlier last week, he surpassed 500 wins in professional tennis. Further on Wednesday, he became the oldest World No. 1 in ATP men's doubles history. This is the first time he reached the top of the rankings and has made it to his maiden Australian Open final.
