Veteran tennis player Rohan Bopanna announces his retirement, sharing an emotional farewell message on social media

Indian tennis stalwart Rohan Bopanna has officially announced his retirement from professional tennis, bringing to a close a remarkable career spanning two decades. The 45-year-old, known for his powerful serve and charismatic presence on court, shared a deeply personal message on social media reflecting on his journey, the sacrifices made, and the people who shaped his career.
In an emotional statement, Bopanna described tennis not merely as a sport, but as a guiding force in his life. “Tennis hasn’t been just a game for me — it has given me purpose when I was lost, strength when I was broken, and belief when the world doubted me,” he wrote. From practising on cracked courts in his hometown of Coorg, to standing under the lights of the world’s biggest arenas, Bopanna called the journey “surreal” and expressed profound gratitude for every experience along the way.
He credited his family as the cornerstone of his success. “To my wonderful parents- you are my heroes. You gave me everything so I could chase this dream. The sacrifices you made, the quiet strength you carried, the faith you never lost...I owe it all to you,” he wrote.
His heartfelt message extended to his sister Rashmi, his wife Supriya, and their daughter Tridha, describing how their unwavering support, love, and inspiration carried him through the rigours of professional sport.
Bopanna also paid tribute to the mentors, coaches, and teammates who shaped his career, highlighting the pivotal role of his long-time coach Scott, who guided him for 12 years. “You've seen me through every phase - the highs, the frustrations, the vulnerabilities, the comebacks - and helped shape not just the player, but the man I am today. Your belief, guidance and calm through it all have been my grounding,” he said.
Bopanna emphasised the honour of wearing the tricolour on court. Representing India has been the greatest honour of my life. Each time I walked onto the court with the tricolour beside my name, I felt its pride and its value. Every serve, every point, every match - I played for that flag, for that feeling, for my country,” he wrote.
While he steps away from competitive play, Bopanna confirmed that his journey with tennis is far from over. He expressed a desire to give back to the sport by inspiring young dreamers from small towns, demonstrating that beginnings do not define limits, and that belief, hard work, and heart can achieve the extraordinary.
In his closing note, he offered a heartfelt message of gratitude, “This isn't goodbye... it's a thank you to everyone who shaped me, guided me, supported me and loved me. You're all a part of this story. You're all a part of me.”
