With the Spurs leading the series 1-0, the team anxiously awaits medical updates, as the loss of their primary defensive anchor poses a significant challenge to their postseason momentum.

San Antonio: The San Antonio Spurs' postseason aspirations were clouded Tuesday night (Wednesday IST) after star centre Victor Wembanyama was placed in the NBA's concussion protocol following a jarring face-first fall during a playoff matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers.
A Spurs official stated that the 7-foot-4 French phenomenon is currently undergoing evaluation for a concussion, with a definitive diagnosis expected within the next 24 hours.
The potential loss of Wembanyama for any significant duration serves as a major setback for San Antonio. The team achieved the second-best record in the NBA this season, a resurgence anchored by the versatile rookie.
The Protocol and the Fall
Under the NBA’s health and safety guidelines, any player who enters the concussion protocol must observe a minimum 48-hour period of rest and recovery. Following this window, the player must pass a series of clinical benchmarks while remaining symptom-free. Final clearance to return to competition requires neurological testing and the approval of a team physician in coordination with the league's concussion protocol director.
The injury occurred with 8:57 left in the second quarter. Wembanyama had executed a spin move past Trail Blazers guard Jrue Holiday in the paint when he was fouled. The centre was unable to break his fall, causing his jaw to strike the hardwood with significant force.
Wembanyama remained prone on the court for approximately 30 seconds before sitting up for a minute to speak with teammate Stephon Castle. After Spurs coach Mitch Johnson signalled for a timeout to assess the situation, Wembanyama stood up and immediately sprinted through the tunnel toward the locker room. At the time of his departure, he had recorded five points, four rebounds, one block, and one assist in 12 minutes of play.
Postseason Stakes
Veteran Luke Kornet was called upon to replace the rookie, starting the second half at centre for San Antonio.
The Spurs are making their first playoff appearance since 2019 and currently hold a 1-0 lead in their Western Conference first-round series against Portland. That opening victory was fueled by a dominant 35-point performance from Wembanyama.
The injury took place just one day after Wembanyama made league history as the first unanimous winner of the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award. Throughout his debut season, he has been a statistical juggernaut, averaging 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.1 blocks per game. San Antonio now awaits medical results that will determine the immediate future of their star player and their playoff run.
