Indian cricketer Ashish Nehra, known for his unique and distinct persona among Indian cricket players, has once again shown his kind-hearted nature. Nehra, who represented India from 1999 to 2017, was a key player in the Indian pace attack, alongside Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan, during the 2003 World Cup. He was also a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team. After retiring from playing, Nehra continued to contribute to the sport, serving as a part of the coaching staff for various IPL teams, and in 2022, he became the head coach of Gujarat Titans, leading them to an IPL title in their inaugural season.

Nehra has always been different in an age of smartphones and social media. Despite this technological boom, he stayed grounded, still using an old keypad phone and keeping away from the noise of social media.

Recently, commentator Padamjeet Sehrawat revealed a heartwarming story about Nehra’s generosity. During a podcast, Sehrawat shared how Nehra had gifted a house to his childhood coach, Tarak Sinha, who had no permanent residence at the time.

Tarak Sinha, who passed away in 2021, had started his cricket coaching career with Sonnet Cricket Club in Delhi in 1969. Many prominent Indian cricketers, including Shikhar Dhawan, Aakash Chopra, Rishabh Pant, Manoj Prabhakar, and Anjum Chopra, honed their skills under his guidance before joining the national team.

Nehra himself trained at Sonnet Cricket Club once, and during that time, Tarak was late arriving at the club. Nehra, who noticed his late arrival, jokingly asked, “How can you train kids if you can’t even get to the club on time?” In response, Tarak stunned everyone with his reply, “You’re an Indian cricketer, living in a bungalow. I live in a rented house, and the landlord has just given me two days’ notice to leave. That’s why I was late.” 

After two days of heavy rainfall forced the club to remain closed, Nehra arrived three hours late for training on the third day. This time, Tarak decided to joke about Nehra’s tardiness. However, Nehra’s response left everyone in awe. He approached Tarak, who had been teasing him, and handed him the keys to a house. Tarak, surprised by Nehra’s gesture, was left speechless.

Tarak Sinha, who trained over 12 Indian cricketers and more than 100 first-class cricketers, was one of the most respected coaches in Indian cricket. He was also the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team between 2001 and 2002. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to sports, the Government of India honoured him with the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 2018.

This beautiful act of kindness from Nehra speaks volumes about his character, showing that even in the competitive world of cricket, there are moments of compassion and generosity that touch lives beyond the field.
