New Delhi: Climate activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk has released his first video message from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Wednesday, where he is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. In the clip that marked his 25th day of the strike, he stated, "Abhi bhi zinda hoon" ("I am still alive"), addressing widespread concerns regarding his deteriorating health.

Health Status and Hospital Transfer

Wangchuk stated in the three-minute video from his hospital bed that he has lost approximately 11 kg and a significant amount of muscle mass since launching his fast. He was admitted to Medanta Hospital following an order by the Delhi High Court, which allowed him to be moved from Safdarjung Hospital to a medical facility of his choice. Hospital officials confirmed that he is under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Sushila Kataria and remains clinically stable.

Conditions for Ending the Fast

Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike—begun in late June alongside the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)—demands accountability over examination irregularities and systemic reforms. In his latest message, he praised the restraint shown by students during the 'Chalo Sansad' march despite facing police lathicharges.

Reiterating his core demand for student protection, Wangchuk declared that he is ready to call off his fast immediately if the government provides a formal assurance that no student protesters will face FIRs, arrests, or legal harassment. "If I receive that assurance soon, I will end my hunger strike today itself," he stated.

Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh subsequently visited Wangchuk at the hospital to check on his health and urge him to reconsider his fast. While several political figures and nearly 65 MPs have appealed for his recovery, Wangchuk maintains that his fast will continue until a satisfactory guarantee safeguarding the participating students is secured.
