Nagoya: Armless Indian archer Sheetal Devi secured her second consecutive Asian Para Games gold medal in the women's compound individual event, defeating Singapore's Alim Nur Syahidah 142-139 in a tense final on Thursday.

The 19-year-old world champion returned to the range at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square less than two hours after partnering Toman Kumar to win gold in the compound mixed team event. She repeated her triumph over Alim in the Hangzhou 2023 final to claim her second gold and third medal at the ongoing Games.

Alim, who had finished second to Sheetal in the previous edition, made a strong start and established a four-point lead after the opening two ends, each comprising six arrows.

However, the Indian archer mounted an impressive comeback, shooting six 10s, including three Xs — arrows that land closest to the target's centre — across the next two ends. The surge helped her take a two-point advantage heading into the final end, which consisted of three arrows.

With the gold medal on the line, Sheetal maintained her composure and scored 27 points with three 9s in the final end.

Under pressure, Alim could manage only 26 points, registering scores of 9, 8 and 9, allowing Sheetal to seal another memorable victory.

Sheetal now has three medals at the ongoing Games. In addition to her two gold medals, she also won silver in the women's doubles event alongside Odisha's quadruple amputee archer Payal Nag. (PTI)
