New Delhi: PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has voiced her shock and disappointment following the Court of Arbitration for Sport's (CAS) decision to dismiss wrestler Vinesh Phogat's request to share the silver medal with Yusneylis Guzman Lopez from the Paris Olympics.
The CAS ruling, finalized on Wednesday, August 14, rejected Vinesh Phogat’s request to share the silver medal. Phogat had challenged her disqualification from the 50 kg wrestling final and sought a shared silver medal as a resolution.
Earlier, the ad-hoc division established to address disputes during the Olympics had indicated that a ruling would be delivered before the end of the Paris Games on Sunday. Despite the initial optimism expressed by the IOA, the final decision has not been favourable for Phogat.
Vinesh was set to face the United States grappler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal in the women's 50kg event.
However, she was disqualified before the final after exceeding the 50kg weight limit. During the weigh-in before the gold medal match, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams over the limit.
Following her disqualification, Vinesh requested CAS to award her the silver medal. The verdict was supposed to come out on Tuesday at 9:30 pm. However, once again, the decision was delayed to August 16. Moments before the veridct, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) released a statement to confirm that the CAS has deferred the verdict to Friday.
