Nagoya: Indian boxer Priya Ghanghas, the 2026 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, settled for a bronze medal at the ongoing Asian Games on Wednesday after falling to China's Yang Chengyu in the semi-finals of the women's 60 kg division.

The result yields India's 56th medal of the 2026 Asian Games, bringing the nation's overall tally to eight gold, 21 silver, and 27 bronze medals.

Yang displayed greater early aggression in the opening round, though Priya responded with counter-punches, connecting on several clean strikes. Midway through the round, the Indian appeared more effective, connecting with solid combination punches. However, Yang finished the first frame with a powerful blow, prompting judges to award her the round by a 3-2 split, according to ESPN.

In the second round, Priya and Yang exchanged heavy blows following an early flurry from the Chinese fighter. Yang went on to claim the second stanza 4-1.

Priya struggled to pierce Yang's tight defence in the final round, with the Chinese boxer again taking the frame 4-1 to secure the victory and leave the Indian with the bronze.

Earlier in the day, India's women's compound archery trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, and Prithika Pradeep earned a sensational gold medal by defeating China in the team final.

The Indian archers delivered a clinical performance in the gold medal match, prevailing 238-234. Leading from the opening rotation, the victory earned Jyothi her fourth Asian Games gold medal, while debutants Chikitha and Prithika claimed their first Asiad titles.

Additionally, archers Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav clinched gold in the compound mixed team event after edging South Korea in a dramatic shoot-off on Wednesday.

The victory also secured a qualification quota spot for India in the compound mixed team discipline at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The Indian pair held their nerve during a tense final, forcing a shoot-off when the scores stood level before sealing the title with a composure-tested finish in the decider.
