When athletic events begin on Friday at the Tokyo Olympics, Malayalee athlete from Malappuram MP Jabir will be dreaming of a medal for his country. Despite the rough weather and strict Covid protocol in place, Jabir still shares his wonderful experience in Tokyo with Mathrubhumi.

How are the preparations for the games ongoing?

We train every morning on a beach lawn adjoining the Games Village.  Exercises and regular sprinting routines are performed there.  Practicing on the grass lawn from eight to nine in the morning is a good experience.  In the evening, there is also a memorable half-hour bus ride from the Games Village to the stadium with a synthetic track for training.

How are you looking forward to the match day?

My desire is to perform very well for the country. The coach said there is need for concentration during the start of the race and the landing after each hurdle. By the end of the 400m hurdles, the body will also be completely exhausted. It is also important to gain maximum speed and momentum before you reach the finish line.

How about the food in Tokyo? Do you enjoy it?

All kinds of food are available here. We mostly eat white rice and chicken curry for lunch and dinner. We also make sure that supplements of juices and protein foods are also added. I got porotta and beef from a restaurant in the village the other day.  Everyone enjoyed the food.

Did you meet any stars at Olympics village?

I met tennis player Novak Djokovic the other day. I wanted to take a photo, but couldn't. Even though I am an Argentine fan, I would also love to meet and talk to Brazilian footballer Danny Alves.  But none of the senior players on Argentina's Olympic team have arrived. The Brazilian team has senior players like Dani Alves, so it would be interesting to see their matches.

What are the other experiences you had in Tokyo?

The weather here is very hot and humid. There are many restrictions on the Games Village due to the Covid protocol. We can’t travel for sightseeing in Tokyo.  The only sightseeing we had were places that we see during the bus journey when you go for training.
