Kozhikode: VK Anjana, a native of Kozhikode, was crowned the world champion in the 47 kg division of the Sub Junior Powerlifting Championship held in Romania. She bagged the gold medal in the deadlift category by breaking the Asian Record.
Anjana faced several setbacks in her pursuit of becoming a strong woman in Asia. Unable to meet the expenses, the two-time Asian Champion sought help from the Sports Council. However, the amount she received was not enough for her to travel to Romania.
She required around Rs 2 lakh to cover her expenses, including travel and entry fees. A few weeks back, Mathrubhumi published a story discussing her achievements. Lulu Forex Pvt Limited stepped forward to sponsor her as a result.
She is a Plus 1 student at Govt Ganapath Girls High School and has been receiving training under her father, P Anil Kumar, who owns a gym near Tali Temple. She won accolades in the Powerlifting Championship held in Kannur and State Championship held in Varanasi. In 2021, she became the Strong Woman of Kerala. Last year, she won medals in the Asian Championship and Classic Championship held in Dubai.
Earlier this year, she won gold by setting a new record in the National School Powerlifting.
