Thiruvananthapuram: In a considerable setback to Kerala's sports development initiatives, key government-backed sports training programs for school children have come to a standstill due to insufficient funding. The programs, which aimed at nurturing talent for Olympic-level competition, have been abandoned, leaving students without proper coaching or guidance.
The sports programs affected include football ("Goal"), athletics ("Sprint"), boxing ("Punch"), basketball ("Hoops"), and judo, all of which were originally designed to improve skills in these disciplines and target future Olympians. Despite the promise of these projects, the government has been unable to sustain them financially, leading to the cessation of training activities. This has left many students who had been training diligently now stranded without resources or direction.
The programs, launched in 2022 under the Sports Kerala Foundation, were abruptly halted without prior notice, resulting in the infrastructure being left to deteriorate. Coaches have not been paid for several months, and students who had previously received training found themselves unable to continue due to the absence of guidance. Some students who were participating in the state school competitions in Kochi were left unsupported, as there were no trainers available to assist them.
The disruption has had a particularly negative impact on sports that require continuous training, such as boxing and athletics. Several talented children, including those who had performed well at the national level, are now missing out on further development opportunities due to the suspension of these vital programs.
The "Goal" program, which focused on football, and the "Sprint" program for athletics had gained attention in various districts like Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur, and Kozhikode. However, since February, coaches have not received their payments, and students have been deprived of allowances. In June, an official notice confirmed the termination of the programs, marking a disheartening end to the dreams of both the coaches and the children who had invested so much time and effort.
Schools that had been part of the program, including prominent ones across Kerala, sent students to participate in the state school sports meet in Kochi. The situation has caused considerable distress for students and parents alike. The Sports Kerala Foundation has stated that the Sports Council might take over the programs, but it appears that without adequate funding, even the council is not in a position to continue the training initiatives.
In the meantime, the situation remains uncertain, with the future of these promising young athletes now hanging in the balance. Kerala, a state known for its passion for sports, especially in disciplines like athletics, is now facing a crisis that could derail the dreams of many young children aiming for the national and international stage.
The government's decision to halt these programs is seen as a major blow to the future of school-level sports in the state. Many are calling for a comprehensive solution to revive these initiatives and provide the necessary support to young athletes who represent the future of Indian sports.
