The investigation, involving alleged Mafia ties, uncovered schemes using insider information and cheating technology to defraud millions

In a stunning revelation that has rocked the sports world, the FBI has arrested over 30 individuals, including prominent NBA figures, in a sweeping investigation into illegal sports betting and rigged poker games. What started as a probe into illegal gambling has unravelled a complex network implicating current and former players, coaches, and ties to notorious Mafia families.
Key people and charges
The arrests include Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, former NBA assistant coach and player Damon Jones, and several other unnamed co-conspirators. They face charges ranging from sports betting fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, to operating rigged poker games across multiple states.
FBI Director Kash Patel described the case as an “insider trading saga for the NBA,” revealing tens of millions of dollars stolen through fraudulent betting schemes, shady poker operations, and sophisticated money laundering across 11 states. The operations allegedly involve technology-assisted cheating, such as X-ray tables, card-marking contact lenses, and rigged shuffling machines.
The investigations
Two separate but intertwined cases have been charged:
- Operation Nothing But Bet focuses on NBA insiders, including Rozier and Jones, exploiting confidential injury and playtime information to place and encourage fraudulent sports bets.
- Operation Royal Flush targets manipulated high-stakes poker games that used technological devices to cheat unsuspecting players. These games, often held in New York, Las Vegas, and Miami, involved Mafia families such as the Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese, and Bonanno families, who profited from the schemes.
How the fraud worked
The indictment alleges that Rozier tipped off co-conspirators about his injury and early exits from games to influence betting outcomes. Meanwhile, Billups allegedly facilitated high-profile poker games where players and celebrities were deceived by marked cards and cheating technology, resulting in millions lost.
Impact on the NBA and beyond
The scandal has sent shockwaves through the NBA, with both Rozier and Billups placed on administrative leave. The league underscores its commitment to integrity and is cooperating fully with authorities. Sports betting integrity experts say these cases highlight vulnerabilities in how confidential player information is handled and how tech can be used to rig gambling games.
