While Haas offered no official reason, the move follows rising tensions and a reported disagreement between Ocon and team principal Ayao Komatsu after Friday practice.

Mexico City: The paddock at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez was thrown into turmoil following Haas F1 Team’s sudden decision to bench Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. The American outfit announced midway through the weekend that reserve driver Ryō Hirakawa would take over the VF-26 alongside Oliver Bearman for FP3, qualifying, and Sunday’s main race. Haas initially offered no explicit explanation for the unprecedented mid-weekend swap, stating only that no further comments would be issued, while media outlets quickly verified that the decision was not down to any medical emergency or illness.
The abrupt nature of the decision immediately sparked intense paddock speculation regarding the internal breakdown between the French driver and team management. With Ocon already set to leave Haas at the end of the 2026 season—with Ferrari junior Rafael Camara confirmed as his 2027 replacement—reports quickly surfaced suggesting a severe breach in driver-team relations.
Ocon Rejects Allegations of Physical Altercation
In response to widespread media reporting alleging that a heated confrontation with team principal Ayao Komatsu had escalated into a physical clash, Ocon broke his silence via a social media statement. While conceding that a clash of opinions had occurred after Friday practice, the 30-year-old categorically denied any claims of physical violence.
"Following the recent decision from Haas F1 Team confirming that I will not be participating in this weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix, I wish to formally address some media reports and speculation surrounding the situation," Ocon wrote. "Last night, a difference in viewpoints led to a discussion with the parties involved. Whilst I acknowledge that this took place, I categorically reject any reports or allegations suggesting that any form of physical violence was used to resolve any differences of any nature. I strongly condemn violence in all its forms and firmly believe that disagreements should always be handled with professionalism, respect, and mutual understanding."

Paddock Friction and Uncertain Future
Tensions between Ocon and the Haas pit wall had already simmered publicly during Friday’s Free Practice 2 session. Ocon voiced frustration over the radio when instructed to abandon a planned soft-tyre run in favour of medium-tyre data gathering, explicitly arguing with race engineer Gary Gannon before wheeling his car back into the garage.
As per reports, it is increasingly unlikely that Ocon will return to the Haas cockpit for the remaining rounds of the 2026 campaign. The mid-weekend driver swap hands 32-year-old Le Mans winner Ryō Hirakawa an unexpected Formula 1 race debut, while leaving Ocon's immediate racing future shrouded in uncertainty.
