Glasgow: A Games record, a golden sprint and a historic Indian one-two, Dilip Mahadu Gavit delivered one of the defining moments of the Commonwealth Games 2026 by storming to gold in the men's 100m T47, while compatriot Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi sealed silver to cap a memorable day for Indian para athletics.

Gavit blazed across the finish line in 10.71 seconds, breaking the Commonwealth Games record with a sensational performance that left the field chasing.

Praising this landmark moment for Indian para athletics, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated Gavit and Basil after their gold-silver finish.

Basil was not far behind, clocking a season-best 10.83 seconds to ensure India occupied the top two spots on the podium in one of the fastest races of the competition.

England's Kevin Santos claimed the bronze medal in 10.85 seconds, narrowly edging Australia's Jaydon Page, who finished fourth in 10.97 seconds.

The triumph marked India's third gold medal at the Glasgow Games, with Gavit joining weightlifting champion Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila, who earlier topped the podium in the women's Shot Put F57 event.

President Droupadi Murmu hailed Dilip Gavit and Mohammed Basil after India's historic gold-silver finish at CWG 2026.

The spectacular one-two finish also pushed India's overall medal tally to 15 medals, comprising three gold, nine silver and three bronze, further strengthening the country's impressive campaign in Glasgow.

For Gavit, the victory was another remarkable chapter in an inspiring journey. Raised in Toran Dongari, a small village near Nashik in Maharashtra, he grew up in a farming family before a childhood accident changed his life forever.

After falling from a tree at the age of five or six, he suffered a severe injury to his right arm. Delayed medical treatment led to gangrene, eventually resulting in the amputation of his arm below the elbow.

Instead of allowing adversity to dictate his future, Gavit channelled his passion into athletics.

Training on the dusty roads of his village, his potential was spotted by coach Vaijnath Kale, who helped shape him into one of India's leading para sprinters.

The 100m T47 gold adds to an already decorated career. Gavit had won the men's 400m T47 title at the 2022 Asian Para Games, earning India its landmark 100th medal at the continental event.

He also reached the final of the men's 400m T47 race at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, underlining his consistency on the biggest stages.

With Gavit rewriting the Games record books and Basil delivering a silver-winning run, India's para athletics contingent once again showcased its growing depth and established itself among the standout performers at the Commonwealth Games.
