The relocation follows the cancellation of the original April fixture at the Bahrain International Circuit due to escalating military conflict in West Asia, which saw strikes hit targets near the circuit and cause severe air traffic disruptions. To avoid losing a round from the World Championship calendar, Formula 1 and the FIA negotiated with international stakeholders to secure an alternative host venue.

Tripartite Agreement and Naming Rights

Despite taking place in South-East Asia, the race will officially be titled the "Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia". This arrangement comes from a unique tripartite agreement between Formula 1, the FIA, and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia. Under the terms of the deal, Bahrain remains the nominal host of the Grand Prix, retaining ticket revenue rights while Bahraini flag carrier Gulf Air maintains title sponsorship. In turn, the Bahraini government agreed to help cover the substantial operational and hosting costs required to stage the event at Sepang.

Logistical Fit and Sepang's Return

The October slot provides critical logistical advantages for the paddock during a dense autumn flyaway leg. placing Sepang between the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 26 September and the Singapore Grand Prix on 11 October creates a seamless triple-header. Located roughly 320 kilometres from Singapore, the Malaysian venue minimises freight transport strain and travel fatigue for competing teams. The event marks Formula 1’s first return to the Sepang circuit since 2017, reinstating a highly technical track widely celebrated by drivers for its long straights and sweeping high-speed corners.
