Kakamigahara: India ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games women's hockey gold on Friday, defeating defending champions China 1-0 in the final to secure a direct berth at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute with a superb reverse-stick strike, giving India an early lead that they defended until the final hooter.
China, the Paris Olympics silver-medallists, dominated possession for long periods and mounted relentless pressure, but India's defence held firm. Goalkeeper Bichu Devi produced a crucial penalty-stroke save in the second quarter and was outstanding throughout as China repeatedly searched for an equaliser.

India were forced to withstand sustained pressure after the break, with Chinese attacks resulting in multiple penalty corners. The Indian defenders repeatedly threw themselves into the line of fire, while Bichu Devi continued to keep China at bay.
With five minutes remaining, China withdrew their goalkeeper to add another outfield player and committed all 11 players to attack. India nevertheless refused to concede, holding on for a historic victory.
The triumph gives India their second Asian Games women's hockey gold, 44 years after their first title in 1982. They had finished runners-up in 1998 and 2018, losing to South Korea and Japan respectively.
The gold also secures India's direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, making the victory a significant boost for the team after its recent international campaigns.
The final also marked a personal milestone for Lalremsiami, who completed 200 senior international appearances for India during the match. The 26-year-old made her senior debut in 2017 and has since been part of several major campaigns, including India's fourth-place finish at the Tokyo Olympics and its fifth-place finish at the 2026 FIH Hockey Women's World Cup.
Lalremsiami has also won Asian Games silver in 2018 and bronze in 2022, along with gold medals at the 2022 and 2026 FIH Nations Cup and the 2017 Asia Cup.
