Flamboyant T20 freelancer Andre Russell is set to bid farewell to international cricket, bringing an end to a start-stop 15-year journey with the West Indies after the second T20I against Australia on July 22 — fittingly at his beloved Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.

The 37-year-old powerhouse, who was instrumental in the West Indies' golden T20 era, was part of the squads that lifted the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012 and 2016. Known for his brute force with the bat and explosive bursts with the ball, Russell's international career spanned 84 T20Is, 56 ODIs, and a lone Test appearance.

Having last played a non-T20 international in 2019, Russell had become a globe-trotting franchise icon — but never turned his back on the maroon jersey.

“Words cannot explain what it meant,” Russell said in an emotional statement via Cricket West Indies. “To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life. I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.”

Russell’s swan song comes just seven months ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka — a tournament he’ll now watch from the sidelines. His T20I record boasts 1078 runs and 61 wickets, a testament to his dual-threat prowess.

The announcement comes barely a month after Nicholas Pooran's shock international retirement, signaling the end of an era for West Indies cricket.
