The summer transfer window may be closed across Europe's major leagues, but the transfer market is far from quiet.

With Premier League clubs unable to make conventional signings until January, attention has shifted to the pool of unattached players who can still join clubs outside the window. The Premier League summer window closed at 11pm BST on September 1.

Everton are among the clubs exploring that market after failing to add another striker on deadline day. According to The Sun, the Merseyside club are considering former England striker Jamie Vardy, 39, who is available after leaving Cremonese. TalkSport reports that David Moyes' side could also consider former Manchester United and France forward Anthony Martial, 30, who left Mexican club Monterrey.

The free-agent pool contains considerably bigger names, with former Manchester United stars Jadon Sancho and Paul Pogba, former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and former Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling among those currently without clubs. Sky Sports says the group includes players with a combined historic peak market value of around £1.15 billion.

Sancho, 26, is attracting particular attention. TalkSport reports that Brazilian club Palmeiras are among the surprise options being discussed for the England winger, while previous reports have also linked him with a possible return to Borussia Dortmund.

Vardy's future is also generating interest beyond Everton. The Guardian reported on September 2 that the veteran striker was being linked with a move to São Paulo or Sheffield Wednesday, while Wrexham had also been mentioned in transfer speculation before deadline day.

Zaha market heats up

Wilfried Zaha, 33, is another prominent name on the free-agent market. La Gazzetta dello Sport has linked the Ivory Coast winger with Roma, who are looking for an attacking option, rather than AC Milan. Zaha previously played for Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Charlotte FC.

Elsewhere, Chelsea's highly rated Brazilian forward Estevao Willian is reportedly considering his future amid concerns over first-team opportunities under new manager Xabi Alonso. ESPN Brasil reports that the 19-year-old could consider his options in January if his situation does not improve. Recent reports say he has had limited Premier League minutes at the beginning of the season.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have retained a potential escape route involving Ethan Nwaneri. The 19-year-old England Under-21 winger has joined Borussia Dortmund on loan, with reports saying Arsenal have secured an option to recall him in January if required.

Sunderland winger Chemsdine Talbi is another player attracting interest after the window shut. The 21-year-old Morocco international is reportedly in talks with Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad, with Turkish giants Fenerbahce and Galatasaray also interested.

Lautaro rejects Barcelona speculation

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez has also addressed transfer speculation. The Argentina international said he was honoured by Barcelona's interest but chose to remain with Inter.

The post-deadline market therefore remains active, particularly for free agents. Premier League clubs can still recruit players without clubs, while leagues in several other countries have registration windows that remain open into September or beyond.
