Diamond Harbour briefly rallied with a Luka Majcen goal, but late strikes from Jairo Samperio, Andy Rodríguez, and top-scorer Alaaeddine Ajaraie sealed the historic victory.

Kolkata: NorthEast United FC etched their name in Indian football history by becoming the first team in 34 years to successfully defend the prestigious Durand Cup title. The Highlanders overwhelmed debutants Diamond Harbour FC with a commanding 6-1 victory in the final played at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan stadium in Kolkata.
The match began with NorthEast United asserting early dominance. Asheer Akhtar opened the scoring in the 30th minute, followed by Parthib Sundar Gogoi doubling the lead just before halftime (45+1' minute). NorthEast United extended their advantage early in the second half, with Thoi Singh scoring a tap-in goal in the 50th minute to make it 3-0.
Diamond Harbour FC fought back with a consolation goal in the 68th minute when Luka Majcen redirected a header from Jobby Justin. However, the high-scoring NorthEast United were relentless. Spanish forwards Jairo Samperio and Andy Rodríguez added quick-fire goals in the 81st and 85th minutes, respectively.
Topping off their dominant display, tournament top-scorer Alaaeddine Ajaraie converted a penalty deep into stoppage time (90+3') to seal the historic win and complete the 6-1 scoreline.
Ajaraie, instrumental throughout the tournament, finished with eight goals and three assists, earning both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards. NorthEast United’s goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh also received the Golden Glove award for the second consecutive year, highlighting the team’s all-around excellence.
The victory cements NorthEast United’s reputation as one of India’s powerhouse football clubs and places them alongside East Bengal, the last club to retain the Durand Cup trophy with three consecutive wins ending in 1991.
Diamond Harbour FC, playing in their first major tournament, made an impressive run to the final, including a notable victory over East Bengal, signalling a promising future despite the loss.
