New Delhi: Brazil star Neymar has signalled that his illustrious football career could reach its conclusion in 2026, admitting that persistent injury struggles have forced him to evaluate his future on a year-by-year basis.

The 34-year-old forward, who recently signed a contract extension with his boyhood club Santos, declined to rule out a total departure from the sport at the end of the current calendar year. After returning to Santos in January 2025, Neymar proved instrumental in the club’s top-flight survival, netting five goals in the final five matches of the season to secure their place in the Brazilian first division.

Despite his resurgent form on home soil, the veteran remains non-committal about his long-term prospects.

“I don't know what will happen from now on, I don't know about next year,” Neymar told the Brazilian online channel Cazé on Friday. “It may be that when December comes, I'll want to retire. I'm living year to year now.”

The Road to the World Cup

Neymar’s candid admission arrives during a pivotal year for both club and country. The forward emphasised the gravity of the upcoming months, noting the personal and professional stakes involved.

“This year is a very important year, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team, as it's a World Cup year, and for me too,” he said.

The quest for a final World Cup appearance remains a significant challenge. Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, with 79 international goals, has not featured for the Seleção since suffering a major knee injury in October 2023. While he recently underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure to address recurring joint issues, his lack of international match rhythm has sparked debate over his inclusion in the squad.

Ancelotti’s Fitness Mandate

The hurdles for Neymar extend beyond the treatment room. Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has maintained a strict selection policy since taking the helm, repeatedly stating that only players at peak physical fitness will be considered for the 2026 World Cup.

The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is set to run from June 11 to July 19. For Neymar, the next few months at Santos will serve as the ultimate proving ground for his fitness and his legacy.
