Malappuram: In his interview to a television channel, Indian footballer Ashique Kuruniyan had urged the Kerala government to set up better training grounds for the footballers in the state rather than spending crores on its far-fetched dream of getting the Argentenian team comprising Messi play a friendly match in Kerala.
However, his statements turned out to be controversial. In response to Ashique’s statement, Kerala sports minister Abdurahman had said that “the Kerala government had designed projects worth Rs 2000 crores for availing better facilities to sportspersons post 2016.”
“Any complaints regarding the existing facilities will be immediately fixed. The Kerala government is committed to ensuring round-the-clock training facilities to athletes/sportspersons in the state,” the minister added.
Meanwhile, Ashique has now come out with a clarification on his statement. “I tried to point out the lack of facilities/maintenance on the grounds in the state. However, I was quoted out of context; in an attempt to add political colour to my opinion,” said Ashique.
Following the controversy, the Indian footballer met sports minister Abdurahman at the CPM Malappuram district committee office on Friday afternoon. They were engaged in a discussion for over 20 minutes.
