Brazil may have the deeper squad on paper, but Argentina possess something statistics cannot fully measure, the confidence and chemistry of a group that has already conquered the world.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is officially underway.
With the opening matches already setting the tone for a month-long football spectacle across the United States, Canada and Mexico, attention is turning to the tournament favourites. And as has often been the case throughout World Cup history, two South American powerhouses stand at the centre of the conversation: Argentina and Brazil.
The defending champions arrive determined to retain their crown, while Brazil enter the tournament with one of the deepest and most talented squads in world football. Both possess world-class players in every department, but how do they compare position by position?
Goalkeeper: Trusting the big-match specialists
Argentina’s biggest asset between the posts remains captain.
The goalkeeper earned legendary status during the 2022 World Cup, producing decisive saves against the Netherlands and France before making his unforgettable stop against Randal Kolo Muani in the final. Few players thrive under pressure quite like Martínez, whose penalty shootout record has repeatedly rescued Argentina in knockout football.
Brazil’s Alisson Becker, however, is arguably the more complete modern goalkeeper. Comfortable with the ball at his feet, dominant in one-on-one situations and capable of operating as a sweeper behind a high defensive line, Alisson offers tremendous tactical flexibility.
Advantage: Argentina
Martínez’s proven ability to decide major knockout matches gives Argentina a slight edge.
Defence: Brazil’s strength in numbers
Argentina’s defence has been one of the foundations of their success under Lionel Scaloni. The partnership of Cristian and Nicolás Otamendi remains battle-tested, while Lisandro Martínez provides additional quality and versatility.
Yet Brazil possess arguably greater depth.
Marquinhos, Bremer and Gabriel Magalhães form an imposing group of centre-backs capable of handling different tactical situations. While Brazil have some concerns at full-back, their central defensive options are among the strongest in the competition.
Advantage: Brazil
The Selecao’s depth and individual quality give them the nod.
Midfield: Argentina’s control room
This is arguably Argentina’s strongest department.
Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and have developed into one of international football’s most balanced midfield combinations. Together they provide creativity, energy, ball retention and tactical discipline.
Brazil’s midfield is built around Bruno Guimarães, supported by the experience of Casemiro and the creativity of Lucas Paquetá. While individually talented, the unit has not consistently displayed the same level of cohesion as Argentina’s trio.
Advantage: Argentina
The world champions possess the most complete and synchronised midfield.
Attack: Brazil’s explosive Arsenal
Vinícius Júnior has emerged as one of the world’s most dangerous forwards, while Raphinha continues to deliver goals and work rate. A fit Neymar remains capable of changing matches with a single moment of brilliance, while Endrick, Gabriel Martinelli and Matheus Cunha provide depth few nations can match.
Argentina continue to revolve around Lionel Messi, whose influence remains immense. Alongside him, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez form one of the tournament’s most effective attacking partnerships.
The difference lies in depth. Argentina’s frontline is excellent, but Brazil possess more elite options capable of altering games from the bench.
Advantage: Brazil
The Selecao boast greater attacking variety and firepower.
Who holds the edge?
The comparison remains finely balanced.
