Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government signed an agreement with Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools to set up an academy in Kunnamkulam Sports Division under the sports ministry.

Former Indian ace player Baichung Bhutia visited the state secretariat under special invitation and met minister V Abdurahiman.

“Even today, the excitement that surrounds Baichung Bhutia on the field remains unmatched. He epitomises the essence of a true footballer, having dedicated his life to the beautiful game and striving to elevate Indian football to greater heights,” wrote the minister in a Facebook post sharing the news of the collaboration.

“The legacy of Baichung Bhutia is now evident in the Baichung Bhutia Football Schools. This is an esteemed football academy that boasts four players who currently represent the Indian national team. Notable stars such as Sandesh Jhingan and Ashiq Kurunian are among the talented alumni of the Bhutia Academy.

“A football academy under Bhutia's guidance will be established in the Kunnamkulam Sports Division. This academy will provide the most suitable facilities for nurturing budding football talents. This joint venture is expected to create one of the finest football academies, further propelling the progress of football in Kerala.

“Kunnamkulam Sports Division is already equipped with top-notch facilities, including a FIFA-standard grass field, an indoor stadium, and a sports medicine centre. Additionally, a state-of-the-art hostel, constructed for Rs 4.5 crore, will soon be available for students. Other supplementary training facilities like a swimming pool and a fitness centre are also ready to complement the training programs," the minister wrote.

Baichung Bhutia has expressed his gratitude for the support and assurance extended by the Kerala sports department. The academy is set to begin operations at the end of this month, once all formalities are completed.
