Fletcher has since apologized for the "unacceptable" language, which he stated was used "in the heat of the moment." United confirmed they have also taken internal disciplinary action, focusing on the player's education.

London: The Football Association has handed Manchester United prospect Jack Fletcher a six-game suspension following a disciplinary investigation into his use of homophobic language during a competitive match.
The sanction stems from an incident in October 2025 during an EFL Trophy fixture against Barnsley. The 18-year-old midfielder, who is the son of former United captain and current coach Darren Fletcher, was dismissed from the pitch after a verbal altercation involving a discriminatory slur.
Disciplinary Findings and Penalties
The FA determined that Fletcher committed an "aggravated breach" of Rule E3.2, which covers misconduct involving references to protected characteristics, in this instance, sexual orientation. Following the hearing, the governing body imposed the following:
- Competitive Ban: A six-match suspension from all domestic football.
- Financial Penalty: A fine totalling £1,500.
- Compulsory Training: Requirement to attend an FA-sanctioned education course centred on diversity and inclusion before the close of the season.
Official Reactions
Fletcher did not contest the findings, acknowledging his error in a public statement released on March 4, 2026:
"I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment. Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game."
Manchester United has confirmed that internal disciplinary measures were also addressed. The club stated they have focused on educating the player to ensure he aligns with the values of their All Red All Equal initiative.
While Fletcher has recently broken into the senior squad, making his Premier League debut in late 2025, this suspension serves as a significant hurdle in his first full season of professional football.
