New Delhi: India edged past Pakistan 3-2 in a thrilling SAFF U-17 Championship clash in Colombo on Monday, but it was a controversial goal celebration that stole the spotlight off the field.

At the Racecourse International Stadium, India topped Group B with goals from Dallulmuan Gangte (31’), Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam (63’), and Rahan Ahmed (73’).

Pakistan fought hard, with Muhammad Abdullah converting a penalty (43’) and Hamza Yasir striking on a rebound (70’) to keep the contest alive until the final whistle.

However, Abdullah’s celebration after scoring the equalizer sparked a storm online.

The youngster ran to the corner flag, sat down, and mimicked sipping tea — a gesture many linked to the viral clip of Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman calmly drinking tea while in Pakistani custody in 2019. Watch the clipping below:

The act, perceived by some as playful banter and by others as a provocation, quickly went viral across social media.

The controversy came just hours after Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf drew criticism for his “0-6” hand gesture towards Indian fans during the Asia Cup Super Fours match, referencing disputed claims about a border skirmish.

The back-to-back incidents have reignited debate over sporting conduct between the two rivals.

On the field, though, India’s resilience stood out. Despite Pakistan’s physical approach and pressing play, India’s quick passing and clinical finishing gave them the edge.

Goalkeepers Manashjyoti Baruah and Saamar Razzak also played crucial roles with decisive saves in a match packed with drama.

While India celebrated progress to the semi-finals, the “tea celebration” ensured the clash remained as much a talking point off the pitch as on it — adding fresh fuel to the already charged India-Pakistan sporting rivalry.
