Cristiano Ronaldo has made history by becoming the first celebrity to reach a combined 1 billion followers across all social media platforms. The 39-year-old Portuguese soccer legend shared the incredible milestone on Thursday through his social media accounts, including Instagram and his newly launched YouTube channel.

Ronaldo, who is regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, streamed a live follower counter on YouTube as he approached this monumental mark. His Instagram alone accounts for more than 639 million followers, making up the largest portion of his overall social media following. It represents around 8 percent of the global population.

Ronaldo’s social media dominance

Along with his Instagram followers, Ronaldo also commands a huge presence on other platforms. He has 170.5 million followers on Facebook and 113 million on X. Additionally, he has growing audiences on Chinese platforms like Weibo and Kuaishou, contributing to his record-breaking total.

To celebrate reaching 1 billion followers, Ronaldo posted an emotional message across his social media platforms, expressing his gratitude for the unwavering support he’s received throughout his career.

“We’ve made history—1 BILLION followers! This is more than just a number—it’s a testament to our shared passion, drive, and love for the game and beyond," he wrote. 

Ronaldo reflected on his journey from the streets of Madeira to the world’s biggest football stages, saying, "I’ve always played for my family and for you, and now 1 billion of us stand together." 

“You’ve been with me every step of the way, through all the highs and lows. This journey is our journey, and together, we’ve shown that there are no limits to what we can achieve," he added.

 "The best is yet to come, and we’ll keep pushing, winning, and making history together," he wrote.
