Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has turned down the opportunity to take charge of the Netherlands national team, citing a desire to remain involved in the day-to-day rhythm of club management.

Slot had emerged as a primary target for the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to succeed Ronald Koeman following the Netherlands' 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. While the 47-year-old manager held preliminary talks with the federation, he ultimately opted not to enter formal contract negotiations.

Daily hands-on coaching remains the priority

Explaining his decision, Slot emphasised that his current career stage calls for daily interaction with players—an aspect of coaching that national team management simply cannot match.
"At this stage in my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team. And why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like," Slot told Voetbal International.

The Dutchman expressed gratitude toward the Dutch federation while clarifying his decision:

"I have enormous respect for the national team and for the KNVB and can only be positive about the professional manner in which the talks proceeded that week. For now, I believe club football still has a lot to offer me."

Slot also dismissed any speculation that contract terms or financial disagreements played a role in halting the discussions.

Looking back and moving forward

The former Feyenoord boss has been out of management since departing Liverpool in May. His brief tenure on Merseyside was a memorable one, as he led the club to the Premier League title during his solitary season in charge.

While Slot feels the timing is not right to step into the international arena, he left the door open for a future stint in charge of Oranje.

"It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me," he concluded. (IANS)
