Chennai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) officially named former India speedster Zaheer Khan as their new head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season on Monday, 21 September 2026. The appointment marks the formal conclusion of Stephen Fleming’s 18-year association with the franchise, having served as a player in 2008 and head coach from 2009 to 2026. Fleming mutually ended his tenure in July after the five-time champions failed to qualify for the playoffs for a third consecutive season, culminating in bottom-of-the-table finishes in 2025 and 2026. Welcoming the veteran pacer, CSK declared on social media platform X, "Left Arm 'Taking' Over! Welcoming Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach of Chennai Super Kings".

Transitioning Towards Indian Leadership

Zaheer’s appointment marks a strategic shift toward domestic coaching leadership for the franchise following months of internal review. Key figures including MS Dhoni favoured an Indian coach to guide the club through an extensive squad overhaul. Speaking on the announcement, CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan described Zaheer as "one of the finest cricketing brains" in the global game. Expressing his excitement, Zaheer stated via official team channels that he had always relished facing CSK at Chepauk and looked forward to joining a franchise with such a rich history.

Pedigree and Rebuilding Mission Ahead

Zaheer brings extensive playing and management credentials to the Chepauk dugout. The 48-year-old took 610 international wickets across formats and finished as India's leading wicket-taker during their successful 2011 ODI World Cup campaign with 21 scalps. Since retiring from competitive play, Zaheer served as Director of Cricket Operations and Head of Global Development for Mumbai Indians before mentoring Lucknow Super Giants in recent seasons. His primary task at CSK will be establishing stability and overseeing a tactical transition after three difficult campaigns.
