Adelaide: A disciplined Australian bowling attack left India reeling at 175/8 at the time of reporting on the opening day of the pink-ball Test.
A resolute Nitish Kumar Reddy, unbeaten on 42 and inching towards a hard-fought half-century, is holding the fort alongside a cautious Jasprit Bumrah at the crease.
India, having opted to bat first, reached 82 for four at tea but lost two quick wickets immediately after the break. Captain Rohit Sharma managed only three runs before being trapped in front by Scott Boland. Shortly after, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who had scored a brisk 21, was dismissed by Pat Cummins, compounding India’s woes.
The Australian bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the day, exploiting the conditions expertly. Boland and Cummins led the charge with precision, and the visitors found it difficult to build partnerships.
Nitish Kumar Reddy has shown commendable grit amidst the collapse, playing with determination to keep India afloat. However, with just two wickets in hand, the Indian innings hangs by a thread as the Aussie bowlers continue their fiery spells.
Session 1
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hit a century in the first Test, was out for a duck in the first ball of the match, while his opening partner KL Rahul was dismissed for 37.
Star batter Virat Kohli, who had also hit a century in the Perth Test, was out for just 7 from eight balls, while Shubman Gill was dismissed for 31 off the bowling of Scott Boland just before lunch.
Pacer Mitchell Starc was the wrecker-in-chief for Australia as he took three Indian wickets for 31 runs.
Earlier, India made three changes with captain Rohit Sharma, Gill and Ravichandran Ashwin returning to the playing XI after missing the first Test. Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar made way for them.
Brief Scores:
India: 82 for 4 in 23 overs (KL Rahul 37, Shubman Gill 31; Mitchell Starc (3/31).| PTI
