London: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced a major leadership reset for the men's Test team, naming former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as head coach and reappointing Joe Root as Test captain.

A New Era Following Departures

The shake-up follows the international retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and the departure of Brendon McCullum from the red-ball coaching role, though McCullum remains in charge of England's white-ball teams. According to the ECB, Fleming was unanimously chosen following a rigorous recruitment process.

Fleming arrives with an impressive coaching pedigree, having recently concluded an 18-year tenure with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings, where he secured five titles. As a player, Fleming represented New Zealand in 111 Tests, serving as their longest-serving and most successful Test captain with 28 victories.

Root's Second Stint at the Helm

Joe Root returns for his second stint as full-time Test captain, having previously led the side in a record 65 matches between 2017 and 2022, securing 27 wins. Root recently captained the team on an interim basis against New Zealand earlier in the summer.

Expressing enthusiasm for his reappointment, Root stated, as quoted by the ECB: "It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be England Men's Test captain again... I am excited to lead this next generation of players forward."

Upcoming Schedule

Fleming's tenure will officially commence following the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, during which Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach to allow Fleming time with his family. Fleming will then take charge ahead of England's winter tour to South Africa in December.
