Smriti Mandhana has been named India women’s full-time white-ball captain after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down, calling the role a special honour.

Smriti Mandhana has been named the full-time white-ball captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, with the batter describing the new responsibility as “a very special honour” after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down from the role.
The BCCI announced Mandhana’s appointment on Tuesday, handing one of the most experienced players in the Indian team the responsibility of leading the side in ODIs and T20Is.

Mandhana has previously captained India in both formats, having led the team in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. She has also gained leadership experience in franchise cricket, most recently guiding Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.
Reacting to her appointment, Mandhana said representing India had always been deeply important to her and that the opportunity to lead the national team was something she would value.
She thanked the BCCI, selectors, teammates and those who had supported her throughout her career, while also acknowledging Harmanpreet’s contribution as captain.
Mandhana said Harmanpreet had led the team with commitment and had been an important part of India’s journey. She also said she understood the responsibility that came with the captaincy and was looking forward to working with the team and giving her best to take Indian cricket forward.
BCCI backs Mandhana for new role
The BCCI said Mandhana’s long experience with the national team made her a natural choice as India enters a new phase.
Mandhana has been part of the Indian team since 2013 and has emerged as one of the leading figures in the country’s women’s cricket setup. Her experience extends beyond international cricket, with captaincy roles in domestic and franchise competitions adding to her leadership credentials.
BCCI President Mithun Manhas congratulated Mandhana and said the board had full confidence in her ability to take on the responsibility.
He highlighted her experience and understanding of the game, saying those qualities would be valuable as she begins her tenure as India’s full-time white-ball captain.
The appointment marks the beginning of a new leadership chapter for India’s women’s team following Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision to step down.
