Punjab Kings began their IPL 2026 campaign on a positive note, registering a three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans, the 2022 champions. The match, held at the New International Cricket Stadium, saw PBKS overcome a middle-order collapse to chase down the target.
Despite the win, the match was not without concerns for the team. Iyer experienced an injury scare during the game, although he continued to lead his side through to victory.
IPL statement confirms penalty
In an official statement, the IPL governing body confirmed the sanction imposed on the PBKS skipper.
“Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 4 of the TATA Indian Premier League 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh,” the statement said.
It further clarified that this was the team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined ₹12 lakh,” the statement added.
Repeat offence history for Iyer
This is not the first instance of Iyer facing disciplinary action for a slow over rate. During the previous season, he was penalised twice by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
He was initially fined ₹12 lakh for his first breach. A subsequent offence later in the tournament resulted in a heavier penalty of ₹24 lakh, reflecting stricter action for repeat violations.
Over-rate rules under scrutiny
Slow over rates continue to be a recurring issue in the IPL, with strict penalties in place to ensure matches are completed on time.
Captains are held accountable for maintaining the required pace of play, and repeated breaches can lead to increased fines and, in some cases, suspension.
