Hope credited advice from MS Dhoni—that "you always have more time than you think"—for helping him stay patient and pace the record-breaking innings.

New Chandigarh: Advice from former India captain MS Dhoni echoed in Shai Hope’s mind as the West Indies batsman navigated a daunting 352-run target against India on Saturday.
Reflecting on a previous conversation with the iconic wicketkeeper-batter, Hope credited Dhoni's guiding principle that a player "always has more time than you think" with helping him remain patient, break down the target, and compile an unbeaten 162 to steer the West Indies to a sensational five-wicket victory in the third and final ODI.
The West Indies successfully chased down 351 to pull off their highest-ever successful One-Day International run chase, stunning India and sealing a morale-boosting consolation win at Mullanpur. Hope anchored the historic triumph after keeping wickets for the full 50 overs, opening the batting, and battling physical cramps, remaining steadfast until the winning runs were scored.
"On loving chasing, it's always a lot easier in India, especially with the dew. Wanted to finish the series on a strong note and glad we got over the line. Felt something around the groin area but wanted to fight through till the end. Firstly, we were a batter down and probably two, so it was always going to be a challenge. It's something I had a great chat with the great man MS Dhoni, who told me you always have more time than you think. So we tried to break the chase down. I knew India would have to bring fielders in for the over rate penalty. So stayed patient. On the series, I think we played some really good cricket in patches. The batters did really well. We have been wanting to be consistent, and the batters were consistent. From a bowling standpoint, I hope we can get better going forward. On the T20s, we have two days, so hopefully I'll be good to go," Hope reflected following the match.
The visitors' victory prevented a series whitewash, with India having already claimed the three-match rubber through wins in the opening two fixtures.
Earlier, India posted a formidable 351/7, underpinned by magnificent knocks from KL Rahul (129 not out), skipper Rohit Sharma (92), and Ruturaj Gaikwad (57).
In response, Hope's masterclass guided the West Indies home in 48.2 overs. Key contributions from Amir Jangoo (67) and Keemo Paul (44) further bolstered the record-breaking run chase.
