Thiruvananthapuram: As India take on the West Indies in the first one-day international on Sunday, attention will focus on Rohit Sharma as he seeks to overcome scrutiny regarding his position in the side and extend his run-scoring achievements.

The opening match of the series will be played at Thiruvananthapuram.

In 37 ODIs and 35 innings against the West Indies, Rohit has accumulated 1,613 runs at an average of 57.60, featuring three centuries and 12 half-centuries, with a top score of 162.

Rohit, who currently stands as India's third-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket, requires a further 105 runs to become the third Indian batsman to reach the 12,000-run milestone in the format, following Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs) and Virat Kohli (14,941 runs).

Across 288 ODIs and 280 innings to date, Rohit has compiled 11,895 runs at an average of 48.95, recording 34 centuries and 62 half-centuries, alongside an individual high score of 264.

Additionally, Rohit is 135 runs shy of becoming only the fourth opening batsman, and the second Indian after Tendulkar, to reach 10,000 runs as an opener in ODIs. He currently has 9,865 runs in 201 matches and 199 innings at an average of 54.50 in the opening position, with 32 centuries and 49 half-centuries. Tendulkar leads the standings with 15,310 runs in 344 matches and 340 innings at an average of 48.29, including 45 centuries and 72 fifties, with an unbeaten top score of 200.

In nine ODIs this year, Rohit has scored 379 runs at an average of 42.11 and a strike rate of 99.21 across nine innings, registering one century and one half-century. His most recent international appearance yielded a score of 138 against England at Lord's.
