Although the selectors have expressed a desire for him to participate in the England series, Kohli remains resolute in his decision

New Delhi: Virat Kohli has reportedly stated firmly that he will not be revisiting his decision to retire from Test cricket, despite a request from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for him to reconsider. The decision, which followed soon after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket, has raised concerns within the cricketing authorities, especially with the upcoming series in England.
According to reports from the Times of India, Kohli has informed the Indian selectors of his intention to retire from the longest format of the game. Although the selectors have expressed a desire for him to participate in the England series, Kohli remains resolute in his decision. The issue is expected to be resolved after the selection committee meeting next week.
The absence of Kohli from the England tour would mark a significant shift for Indian cricket, as the star batter has been one of the most influential players in the modern era. With Rohit Sharma also stepping away from the Test arena, India will have to look to a younger captain for the format. Kohli’s vast experience, built over a distinguished career, would be sorely missed in such a crucial time for Indian cricket.
Since his debut in 2011 against the West Indies, Kohli has played 123 Test matches across 14 seasons. He has accumulated 9,230 runs and captained the team in 68 Tests, leading India to 40 victories. Known for his aggressive leadership, Kohli has significantly contributed to India’s success in international cricket. As a batter, he has also dazzled with seven double centuries to his name.
Having retired from T20 cricket following India's 2024 World Cup campaign, Kohli now focuses solely on Test and ODI formats. His decision to retire from Tests is likely to have far-reaching implications for the Indian squad’s strategy in the coming years.
